How I Got “Spoiled” And How It Affected Me

Sometimes success can be a double-edged sword. I got started in Internet Marketing around 6 years ago. I muddled through a couple things. Got involved in a MLM program. I never got much of anywhere. Then I bought a class on how to profit from Adsense. I followed the directions, put up a few websites. In 3 months I was up to $3,000 a month! Amazing. Then it went up to $10,000 a month. Fantistic! I was ready to quit my J.O.B. Got really cocky. Then the bottom fell out. As most of us know, the rest is history. Fortunatly my mentor at the time (He was 23, I was 49 at the time) told em to be sure I had different streams of income before I quit. Good thing I followed his advice. So that is the story of my brief IM success. Made over $100,000 in a little less than a year. Boy, I wish I had set up more sites!

So how have I ended up spending a lot of time and money (more than I could ever admit publicly) and not gotten anywhere (yet!). Simople answer: It all happened too fast. I didn’t learn the right principles of setting things up correctly. I didn’t learn that it takes TIME. So I have spent the last few years pursuing the next Adsense success. Meaning someting quick. I actually have 2 products (see, another thing you didn’t know about me) I actuially have (had) a lsit. You can take a look: www.makingcashwithwebsites.com and www.cashmachinesnow.com. So what happened? Well, I thought all I needed to do was toss a few articles to the article services and everything would be fine. So when I didn’t get any traffic, I thought I had failed. When things didn’t happen overnight, I would move on the the next thing, and the next, and the next… I didn’t follow through because I didn’t know how to follow through. I didn’t know what to do with a list. After all I was making money with Adsense within weeks.

So what am I diong differently now? Well, focus is one thing. I am involved an a couple things right now and I am following it step by step. I am derermined to finish. I will try not to get distracted.

So for you new folks who might happen to stop by here. Decided what you want to do. Find a class, program, ebook and stick with it! Now if it’s something that just doesnt’t fit, you might move on, but you really need to stick to one program. Don’t make the mistakes I have made. What happened to me is I was spoiled by the fast success. It says in the Bible that “Steady plodding brings prosperity; hasty speculation brings poverty.” Sounds a bit like me. Don’t let it happen to you.

    Hi Gene,

What you share here is a good stuff. I had no idea of your making so much money on the internet in the past.

I think that at that time it might have been easier to make money with Adsense than it is now. I’ve read and heard from several marketers that in 2004 it went drastically down and several times since then.

But some people are still doing OK with it.

Anyway I think that whatever you did right at that time may still serve you well now.

Now that you know what not to do, things can only go up.

I have a site that was doing great Last August, being in the middle of the first page of both Google and Yahoo. I have done absolutely nothing and the placements went down so much that I was really shocked.

It has recovered substantially in Yahoo but not in Google by now.

So definitely not putting all your eggs in one basket is very valid advice.

    Hi Gene,

I have to say, I think if most people look through the files on their computer they will see there are overfull with all sorts of products, I know mine are. Every single one of them probably could have made me money online if only I had applied them to the full instead of jumping from one to another.

I am just glad I have found a direction to go now and will follow it step by step until it works.

    Keep that focus,

Focusing on one goal is super advice. I think a lot of people see focusing as being…focus on the “business”…even if the “business” has twenty tentacles going nowhere and achieving nothing.

I’m guilty of that as well and have in the last month or so been focusing on one primary business model.

Interestingly, it also involves AdSense as a revenue source.

I’ll be doing a post on it at the start of the New Year.

    Gene,

May I wish you and yours a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Prosperous New Years!!

    Cheers,

  4. I started online just a few months ago and can very much relate to your post. I set up my first site, wrote I think 5 articles and expected to be raking in at 1000s immediately sighs….

It was frustrating and so I kept jumping onto other fads and almost wiping out my savings. I didn’t realise then that this is a REAL business and you have to work very hard to make things work.

I’m just thankful that I chanced upon Alex Jeffreys and his coaching program and I’ve decided to just focus on his proven system and make things work :)
