I have taken up the Challenge

Well, it’s been a while since I have posted and this time it’s something fun…Well, at least I hope it’s fun…hmm I may regret this. Oh well…

My fellow Alex Jeffreys Student, Gary Simpson, has given us a challenge: Post 25 things that most people don’t know about you on your blog and “tag” at least 5 other people to do the same. This is a no brainer (do I have one?) for me as most people don’t know anything about me. So (for better or worse) here goes:

1. I am a devout Christian.

2. I am a wanna be geek. I mess (sometimes literally) with computers, have built them, blown motherboards, you name it. I mostly build through Dell now though.

3. I love model trains and trains (especially old ones) in general.

4. I am on the shy side (still wondering how I got interested in Internet Marketing). If I can ever afford to go to a seminar (Marketing With Alex 2 in Vegas?) you will most likely know me as the one hiding behind a pillar or under a table.

5. I have been married to the same woman for 31 years.

6. I write prose and have actually been published.

7. I work in a prison. (Note I said WORK not live in)

8. I am a Registered Nurse. Have been for 32 years

9. I live in Northern California.

10. One of then best comments about me was from a well known Internet Marketer (he was coaching me at the time) who said I would fit in well in the UK because I have a very dry sense of humor. (But keep it clean)

11. As in #10 I also love making puns.

12. I like woodworking, but don’t have much time for it right now.

13. I am a Volunteer Firefighter.

14. My favorite show is “Dirty Jobs” on Discovery channel.

15. This isn’t as easy as I thought it would be,

16. My dream Vacation is to take my wife to London to see “Phantom of the Opera.”

17. My favorite quote: “Too much sanity may be madness. And maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be!”

18. In light of #17, I tend to be an idealist and probably hopeless romantic. (My sanity may be in question too)

19. I would never make it as a copywriter. My best sales pitch would be, “Please buy my ebook.”

20. I am a closet “Trekkie” If I make it to Vegas and Star Trek, The Experience is open again, I will be there.

21. Don’t even ask how much I have spent on Internet MArketing related stuff and how much of it is sitting on my shelves or on my hard drive.

22. I published an Ebook about “How to Potty Train a Dog” Yes there is money in poop, but it cost more to advertise the book than it brought in.

23. My favorite comics are “Far Side” by Gary Larsen and “Calvin and Hobbs” by Dave Watterson.

24. My favorite drink is Dr. Pepper.

25. If I could buy any car it would be a ‘67 Camero SS fully restored.

26. If I could be gaurenteed success in anything I tried it would be to earn enough to live on 10% of my income and give the other 90% away.

There I even made up for #15. So now you probably know more about me than a lot of people. Maybe even me. Now either my blog will go up in readers or plunge into the abyss of Alexa.

Until next time…

I will list my 5 “tags” here:

1. Kin Lau
2. Norm Malone
3. Petra Weiss

5

Stay tuned to this post I will update it as they respond:

  7. Nikki says:

    Hi Gene,

I’ve just flown over from the Lair to have a look at your list – I LOVE Calvin & Hobbs!! My dad has loads of those books and they always make me laugh. In fact next time I go back to visit my parents I may have to borrow a couple of them. The illustrator is a genius – I love the snowmen as well within those cartoons.

Re: 4 – you may be hiding under the table; I’ll be the one dancing on top of it. I’m never happier than when making a complete idiot of myself!

Re: 10 & 16 – yes, we do have a very dry sense of humour and not everyone gets it (although that might just be my own personal brand of humour!). I hope that you get a chance to visit London with your wife.

Please don’t get TGM into one of his pun moments. People have run scared from such things.

Excellent list Gene, good to know more about you!

  8. Gene says:

Hey PMW, thanks for the comment. I went straight to the top as far as Calvin & Hobbs and The Far Side. Bought the complete collections as soon as they released the books. It’s about time I went back and looked them over again.

As far as #10, I get a lot of blank stares from people. Makes it a lot more fun when they finally “get it” after 5 min.

And # 16 I had hoped for our 30th anniversary that we would make it, but hopefully by out 35th.

    Thanks for flying by.

    Gene

  9. Gene says:

Thanks Gary. I think I will take Nikki’s advice and pass on getting into a “pun war” with you. You probably have a black belt in that as well.

As far as #19 I will think about taking you up on that.

    #20 “Live long and Prosper”

#25 Yep, the Cougar was nice too. My wife actually owned a ‘67 Camero when we got married. It had so much that needed to be done back then that we sold it for (back then) a better (new, safer) car. My oldest son has never forgiven us (WHAT!!!! You guys had a 67 Camero and SOLD it!!!!) Ah yes, if we only knew then what we know now…

  13. Hey Gene,

We’ve got a fair bit in common. You even reminded me that I forgot to put on my list that I’ve done a bit of wood carving – loved it, but very time consumming. Could never do it now unfortunately, but very therapuetic.

I’ve also looked after the younger variety of naughty boys – a stage below prison.

Interesting Gene – good to know you a little bit.

  14. Heidi Passey says:

    Hi Gene –

You are just like me on #4! I’m pretty shy when it comes to meeting new people. I usually sit back quiet and listen.

Phantom of the Opera! I loved it. My parents played the soundtrack for weeks after they saw it. Then when they took me I already understood the story because I had heard the music so much.

  15. Hi Gene,

I’m just following the thread of the “25 things”. I first saw Norm do it and now I’ve followed it to you. As I told Norm, I’m so glad to see you and he are Christians! I am too. Looks like we are in great company of fellow students.

I’ll have to come up with my own list and post it on my blog.

I’m a “johnny come lately”, as I am rather behind the rest of the group. I need a little help on some things, such as how you got the picture to go along with the optin form for the “Listbuilding with Alex” book. I tried getting the picture into my Aweber optin form but couldn’t get it to work.

Also, did you use Adsense to put the ads for Hostgator and Aweber in there? I don’t have Adsense yet.

Good to get to know you. Come over to my blog when you can. It’s still rather new.

  16. Thought you might want to know, I just tried to subscribe to your RSS feed, and even your “subscribe by email” and got error messages on both. The RSS feed says:

    Feed Address: http://feeds.feedburner.com/Geneiltencom

HTTP Error (Code) and Message: (404) Feed not found error: FeedBurner cannot locate this feed URI.

What can I do about this?

    1. If you are a potential or current subscriber, contact the publisher to notify them that their feed content is not available. This may be temporary problem that requires their intervention to resolve, or the publisher may have permanently removed the feed from FeedBurner.
    2. If you are the publisher of this feed, sign into FeedBurner and visit your feed’s “Troubleshootize” tab to view FeedMedic, our automated diagnostic report for your feed. A cause for the problem, and tips for troubleshooting it, may be found there.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Gene,

Nice 25 list. Very good to get to know you better.
I identify with #3 for real trains,
#6 I write both poetry and prose but have not been published.
#7 made me a bit surprised but #8 clarified things and I went back to being impressed.
#18 used to be me and now I’m trying to live more in the real world.

    Great post Gene,
    Vance.

  20. [...] Gene’s answer to the Challenge (http://geneilten.com/i-have-taken-up-the-challenge.html/ ), he mentioned that he is on the shy side.  I tend to be shy, as well.  It is much easier for me [...]

    Hi Gene,

I used to build computers until the prices of them plummeted…now it’s cheaper to buy off the shelf.

Like you, I’m on the shy side. Not bad if approached but unlikely to do the approaching.

You’re sure it’s working at and not living in? :)

10 and 11 fit me also as does 19.

24 doesn’t…have never cared for Dr. Pepper. Tried it once and thought it tasted like cough medicine.

You’re right, we do have a lot in common.

Great 25-list, Gene… er, 26, I mean. I’m a geek also and like many of us, stopped building and fixing computers once it became cheaper to just buy another one. I don’t like Calvin and Hobbes, but I’m a huge Far Side fan. Ed and I have every book of his cartoons, and we read them again and again. Also, do not like Dr. Pepper, preferring root beer, but have resorted to it if Coke was the only other choice. Anyway, good job! And I learned something… like, I’m supposed to go and tag others now. I’m not sure how to do that yet, but will see if I can figure it out.

And just so happens I love Dr. Pepper too… RC cola also a favorite for obvious reasons.

Yeah, love Dirty jobs, Christian and too much stuff on my hard drive. But item #19 is the funniest…

Oh and model trains… I’m an ‘N’ scale man… Wish they’d stay on the tracks though.

    Cheers,

Great Post! I thought it would be hard to come up with 25 things, when I started, too! But, once you get going it all just starts to flow out of you.
Money in poop, yep I think I have heard that before!
I too, am a bit geeky! A+ certified, 4 semesters of Cisco Networking.
I love trains and my wife and I have an LGB set. Usually set it up around the tree at Christmas.
My dad had a 68 Camaro when I was in high school. He took the family to Lion Country Safari in that car and the lions got on top and had to be shooed away, by the ranger.

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for the post. Good thing your dad’s car still had a roof! If it had been one of today’s cars I’m not sure there would not be dents. ASl far as network stuff, I plug it in and pray it works. I have put network stuff in at our chutch and all we do is use it to connect to the Internet. I have a large scale train aas well as the N gauge stuff. Don’t have the time to devote to it right now.
