You Really Need Traffic

Well, it’s time to move on to some more serious stuff. Traffic. I moved to a small town to avoid traffic…oh yeah, I’m not talking about not vehicle traffic, PEOPLE traffic. And not crowds of people around you physically. I am talking the millions of people you don’t want to avoid. These are the ones you want to come to your website. Other than product creation the other thing I really suck at is traffic. I can build a reasonable site, get most of the stuff right but then the big day. I write a couple articles and no one shows up, or I get 10 people to sign up. That is another reason I find myself in Alex’s class; I flunked traffic. Somehow I just can’t seem to get it right. I know it’s a combination of article marketing, blogging, and social bookmarking, but I just can’t seem to get it right. As far as PPC (pay per click) I tried that once and lost $1500.00. Just could not sell enough copies of the e book to cover the costs.

Traffic is the lifeblood of your site, if you ever hope to make anything on the Internet. “The money is in the list,” may be (and is) true, but you can’t build the list unless you generate traffic to your site. So that is my weakest link. (True Confession time) I have built a few websites in the past, but they are just sitting there because they lack traffic, seems to be the thing some past mentors left out or did not go into enough detail, or I missed itl. (Oh, BTW I also suck at sales copy). So my hope is that as I follow along Alex Jeffreys traffic modules I may finally get it right. Hopefully in a few months I will be standing with the likes of Garry Parkes, Gary Simpson, Paula, and Alex and others from the class, because I finally got it right. (Even if I am weird)

Take care until the next post, I will reveal how I get my header graphic.

How I changed the Code on my site

It’s amazing what dropping one line of code can do for your site.  I hope you can find a few useful tips in this video. This is also a classic example of the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) principle. I have wasted hours trying to figure out how to get the video on my site without using YouTube. I finally gave up and did it through YT. Was done in about 10 min. Things like this make me want to stick my head in the toilet and flush it. And knowing my friends who will be reading this there will probably be some really simple code or solution that I have not been able to find. Oh well, off to the bathroom…

Looking Better

Well, things are coming along.  As you can see, I have revamped a few things, and gotten rid of the Kleenex box.  I was using that to test my header image size and placement.  I plan to add some resources in addition to Aweber and Hostgator.  I am proud of myself; I was able to get the pic for  Alex’s free report and resize it to fit my blog.  I was even able to delete the rss post that came installed on the blog.  All that without using the tutorials.  I am using a theme called PrimePress.  I found it on Petra Weiss’s blog at http://www.petra-weiss.com/.  She is a very nice lady coming up in the healthy diet niche.

So please let me know what you think.  I am planning some videos in the near future.

Trying a new look

spent most of the afternoon trying to recreate my site to allow a bit more marketing and a better look.  I’m not sure just where it’s going (possibly in the trash bin) but  after meeting a few of my fellow students and seeing their blogs, I thought I would try something a bit different.

Let me know what you think.

A New Start

Ok so you have seen a bit of who I am and some of what I have been thinking, so it might be good to come to where I am today.  As I said, I did have a bit of success early on with Adsense.  Sometimes I think it came a bit too early.  And a bit too easily.  That’s why it is a good idea to diversify.  Or at least make very sure you have a stable income.  Another danger of too much too soon is you think it is easily replaced…just as quickly.  That’s where I made a major mistake.  I got stuck on the “Internet Merry Go Round.”  Most of you have been there.  Spending thousands of dollars on the next thing by the next “Guru” and on and on.  Sad part is you are usually left standing in the middle of the street with an empty wallet after the end of the course.  Yep, Mr. Guru says, “well, you’ve finished the last of the course, gook luck, bye, have a nice life.  Oh, and by the way if you want to take your Internet “success” to “the next level,” I have my next $5,000 course for you.”  Sad to say I have spent around $40,000 on this stuff.  Always searching for that next run of big cash.

Well, let me tell you something, it’s not always as easy as the guru or his sales pages make it look.  Anything you try is going to take work and commitment. I can’t lay all the blame on my teachers either.  Perhaps I should have listened a bit more closely.  I must say that for every class I have taken, I have learned something.  I have learned the basics of audio and video editing.  I have also learned how to put up a fairly good camtasia video as well.  I cam maneuver my way through a cpanel and have Word press installed in a couple minutes.

SO I decided to join up with Ales Jeffreys.  He has a big challenge ahead of him.  transforming a relative idiot who is scared to death of failing into reasonably profitable marketer,  The big question is, can he do it?

Looking back on just the few weeks I have already constructed a blog and an official website http://www.howtobuildalistnow.com/ This is all about how Alex builds a list and sells stuff. We all know the old saying “The money’s in the list.”  But the other side is’ “what are you going to sell to that list?”

Alex guides you step by step through the process.

Remember, this is not a get rich quick thing, or as Alex puts it, “don’t run after the money, let the money run to you.”  Put another way in the Bible, “Steady plodding brings prosperity, hasty speculation brings poverty.”  If you follow Alex’s instructions you should do well.

So, we will see just how good Alex is.  And we will see how much I am up to the challenges of marketing and making money.

Bye for now,, be back soon.

Gene

PS I have been visiting  fellow students blogs and am amazed at how good they all look.  I think you will be seeing some changes here before too long.

Everything I know I learned from “Pinky and the Brain”

Ithought I’d take a different track today. Anything worth pursuing requires a certain mindset. It doesn’t matter if you are trying to keep a marriage going, raise kids, or build your business. So I thought I would share a few thoughts about mindset.
In the early 1990’s there was a popular cartoon show called “Pinky and the Brain.” Unless you are VERY young you probably remember it. Pinky was the comic relief with a very simple outlook on things to The Brain’s very serious view. They had a very simple goal: Take over the world! Every episode opened with Pinky on the little wheel asking, “So what are we going to do tonight?”

“Same thing we do every night, Pinky,” replies The Brain. “Try to take over the world!”
So the rest of the show was spent watching them undertake Brain’s elaborate, crazy plans for world domination. These always ended in disaster. After the collapse of another plan the show ends with Brain saying something like: “We must rest for tomorrow night, Pinky.”

“Why?” Pinky would ask. “What are we going to do tomorrow night, Brain?”

“The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world!”

Your plans may not be as grandiose as The Brain’s, but we all have plans, hopes and dreams. Most of you are trying to build a business. So what can we learn from Pinky and The Brain?

Well, one thing you need is determination. Brain set his goal and was going to achieve it. Nothing was going to stop him. Not even failure. Even thought it looked like an impossible task for a lab mouse to rule the world that did not stop him. He did not consider his size for a moment; never entered his mind.

Next The Brain was always focused. He kept his goals in sight all the time (except when Pinky distracted him, usually with funny and catastrophic results). Brain was unwavering in what he wanted.

So how does this apply to you? If you are serious about building your own business, you can’t give in. Not to fear, frustration, or failure. Most people never start because they are afraid of failing. Sometime you have to fail to learn. If you do, pick yourself up, brush off the dust and try again. No one ever succeeded by quitting. Every week The Brain was back out there with another plan going for it again.

Also remember, don’t lose focus. This is something that has taken me a long time to learn. As you sift through all the stuff that bombards you, pick what you think is the best way and stick to it until; 1. It works or 2. It doesn’t. If it works, you have your income stream in place and go for another. If it doesn’t, stop and figure out why and improve it or pick something else. The Brain never stopped; after each failure, he re-grouped and started again.

So, use this and go out there and conquer your world!

This post is dedicated to my friend and fellow “Pinky and The Brain” fan, Liz Tomey and her husband, Jamie Bing, who have both been examples to me of what it takes to succeed.

Who Am I?

So who is Gene Ilten?  Well, I’m not a lot different from most anybody is reading this.  I have been a registered nurse for over 30 years, specializing in emergency medicine.  The past few years have been challenging financially and I am hoping to supplement my income.

A few years ago, I got a card in the mail inviting me to an Internet marketing seminar. When I returned I had a merchant account and some sort of coaching to show me how to do it.  From the coaching I learned some very basic ideas of how to set up a website, and that was about it.  When the coach was finished, I found myself wondering, “What am I going to sell?”  So other than a little bit of basic knowledge on the website, which is now completely obsolete(and long gone from the web).  That was my first foray into Internet marketing.

Like many reading this post,  I have tried several coaching programs, some with a little bit of success but, many without much success.  My biggest success came a couple years ago at the height of the Adsense tide. In one year I made over $84,000, then the bottom fell out, and I was back to square one.  The one piece of wisdom that I brought out of that was the need to make sure that everything is secure before you even think about quitting your job.  Fortunately for me the person that was mentoring me at that time advised me to do just that.  I was probably two months from leaving my job, which would have been a disaster.  I also learned the value of multiple streams of income. So my advice  is to be sure that what you are earning on the Internet is secure, that you have your debts paid off, and that you are able to replace your income.  Also don’t depend upon just one stream of income; be sure that you have a few streams in place, so that if one dries up, you have others to take over until you can replace it.  The most important thing I learned from my experience is that you CAN make money on the Internet.

At present I am studying under Alex Jefferys to learn how to take my business to the next level.  Alex is a few steps ahead of me and very willing to share his knowledge.

What I hope to share with you in this blog is that an ordinary person, just like you, CAN become successful on the Internet.  Hopefully, as you see posts go by, I will share what works, and what does not, so you can learn to be a success also.  I believe wholeheartedly that, with the right mentoring and the right mindset, anyone can be successful and earn a good living on the Internet.
